On this Valentine’s Day, I wanted to do something nice for myself that didn’t involve food. Well, at least food to eat. Since this “holiday” inspires so much chocolate and any kind of baked items, I wanted to treat myself to an alternative – face food! Since I’m sick and staying home, my options for a food-based facial were limited.
I recalled my love for the book “No More Dirty Looks” – The Truth About Your Beauty Products and the Ultimate Guide to Safe and Clean Cosmetics, which is an exciting new book from journalists Siobhan O’Connor and Alexandra Spunt. I found this book during my internship at Da Capo Press and I believed in their message so much that I made all the women in my family read it.
These journalists expose the harsh chemicals that are found in our beauty products, particularly women’s products. I went on a binge after I read this book. I threw out my makeup, my shaving cream, my lotion, my chapstick, and yes, even that shampoo that I swore gave me extra body! I thought it was doing good for my body, but in fact, it was only harming it.

Based on my inspiration from this book and what I’ve noticed my skin needs, I created a face mask based off natural foods. The mask I created is a Greek yogurt, orange, coconut oil mask. The yogurt contains lactic acid, a gentle exfoliator that will help to clean your pores. Along with the milk fat in the yogurt, adding a bit of citrus adds an extra punch of exfoliation. The Vitamin C and the citric acids contained in the orange will really slough off the surface of your face. Since the exfoliator factor is in play, I’ve added coconut oil to provide a soothing, calming, moisturizing effect. Plus it just smells amazing! You’ll want to eat it, and in fact you can.
After I washed the mask away, I truly felt a bit more rejuvenated and my skin looked more moist. Let’s just hope this moisture lasts through the constant nose blowing throughout the rest of the day;)
Whatever you’re doing this Valentine’s Day, I hope you’re treating yourself nicely. And not just today, but everyday.
Yogurt, Orange, Coconut Face Mask
1 tbs fresh orange juice
2 tbs Greek Yogurt
1/2 tbs warm coconut oil
1. In a small mixing bowl, melt the oil in the microwave for 20 seconds until it turns to liquid
2. Slowly add the orange juice until fully combined. Set aside
3. In another small bowl, add the Greek yogurt. Slowly combine the oil-orange juice mixture until creamy and fully-incorporated
4. Clean your face. Put about 1.5 tbs of the mask over your entire face, excluding your eyes and mouth
5. Leave the mask on your face for 20 minutes
6. Wash your face and dab with a moist washcloth
*This makes about 4 face masks (or a cup of yogurt for breakfast!)
Happy Valentine’s Day! Be kind to yourself.
